Apple to build massive R&D center in Japan

Apple is planning to open up a massive new research and development center in Japan, according to local media which were told about the plans directly from the country’s Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.

Apple already has a number of RD facilities worldwide in countries like the U.K., China, and Israel, but the prime minister says an announcement of the the new facility in Japan will be coming soon.

“Apple has decided it undertake cutting-edge RD in Japan,” Jiji news service quoted Abe as saying in a campaign speech outside of Tokyo ahead of a general election on Sunday. “It will be formally announced soon.”

The new RD center in Japan will be one of Apple’s biggest in Asia, but it’s still unknown what it will be used for, where it will be located, and when Apple researchers will be start working there. Apple representatives in Japan did not immediately respond to requests to comment.
